8. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 国芳)
Ladies handbags with Japanese art Ukiyo-e as the theme (Ukiyo-e handbags)
Ukiyo-e, meaning “Pictures of the Floating World”, is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. It depicts Japanese people’s life during the Edo period (17-19 centuries).
Ukiyo-e has influenced many Western artists including Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Both Van Gogh and Monet collected many Ukiyo-e prints.
In this section we introduce three Ukiyo-e masters and their arts,
- Utagawa Kunisada (歌川 国貞): “Modern 32-Type Countenances”, “Dawn at Futamigaura” and “Beauty Representing the Poet Kamakura Udaijin” - Sorrow of the Shogun.
- Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 国芳): “Portrait of Nozarashi Gosuke” (“Nozarashi Gosuke carryimg a long sword”), “Beauty & Street Knight” and “Obsessed with Cats” (“Cats Suggested as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido”).
- Toyohara Chikanobu (豊原 周延): “The Ueno Park” (Also known as “Flowering Cherry Blossoms at the Ueno Park”), “Touring Asakusa Park”, and “Chiyoda Castle”.
