Ukiyo-e 06, KH-1, Handbag - Hokusai, The Great Wave
Ukiyo-e Bag - The Great Wave.
Ukiyo-e (Japanese, meaning "Pictures of the Floating World"). It represents Japanese art of 17-19 centuries.
「神奈川沖浪裏」
The original title in Japanese is “神奈川沖浪裏”; in English, it is “Under the wave of Kanagawa”, indicating the boats are almost under the giant wave.
This is Hokusai's (北斎) most famous work, which was created during his age of 70s while he was at the height of his career.
The Great Wave comprises three main elements: the sea, three boats and a mountain. The picture depicts an enormous wave that threatens three boats off the coast of Kanagawa, while Mt. Fuji rises in the background. Kanagawa, present-day, is Yokohama City of Kanagawa Prefecture.
1. Sea and Waves:
The sea with the extended waves, about to break, dominates the composition. The wave forms a circle around the center of the design, framing Mt. Fuji in the background.
2. Boats:
In the scene there are three fast boats that are used to transport live fish from the "Izu and Boso Peninsulas" to the markets in Edo Bay.
3. The Mountain:
The mountain with a snow-capped peak is Mt. Fuji, which in Japan is considered sacred and a symbol of national identity. The dark color around Mt. Fuji seems to indicate that the scene occurs early in the morning, with the sun rising from behind the observer, illuminating the mountain's snowy peak.
This painting was very famous at the time and is still a world famous painting to date - one of the most recognizable works of Japanese art in the world.
Created in 1829–1832
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎; Japanese, 1760–1849)
