Fuji from Kanaya on the Tokaido

from Hokusai’s famous series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”
「冨嶽三十六景 東海道金谷ノ不二」
In this print, Hokusai (北斎) depicts travelers crossing the Oi River (大井川) at Kanaya (金谷) on the Tokaido road (Japanese: 东海道, meaning “East Coast Road”). This image also shows the “Distant View of Mt. Fuji”.
Tokaido (东海道, East Coast Road) is the most important traffic route of “The Five Routes” (五街道, Gokaido) which were the main traffic lines connecting to other provinces and cities from the capital Edo Castle (江戸) during the Edo period.
Mt. Fuji locates in the middle of Kyoto and Edo. When people travel along the coastal traffic line (Tokaido route) Mount Fuji can be seen in many places. Ukiyo-e often depicts people traveling along Tokaido road, with Mount Fuji as the background.
Kanaya (金谷) was the twenty-fourth of the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido road, and was a small town by the Oi River (大井川), a river in Shizuoka Prefecture (静岡県), Japan.
For defense purpose: Oi River has no bridge and ferry
As the Tokugawa shogunate forbade the construction of any bridge or establishment of a ferry service on the Oi River (大井川 ) for defensive purposes, travelers had to crosss the river by walking when the river level dropped to be able to walk through. In this print, Hokusai (北斎) depicts how the travelers cross the Oi River.
