Fuji from Kajikazawa in Kai Province

(Kajikazawa in Kai Province, Japanese: 甲州石班沢)
from Hokusai’s famous series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji”
「富嶽三十六景 甲州石班沢」
The scene of this print, Kajikazawa, locates near the source of Fuji River, where there is a confluence of two mountain streams Kamanashi and Fuefuki Rivers. The two streams violently flow into each other and merge there that gains speed and that is why the waves in this picture look almost like those at sea.
A fisherman on a rugged rock is casting his net, his son crouches patiently beside him, and the peak of Mt.Fuji soaring out of the morning mist. This is a masterpiece that depicts both the beauty and seriousness of nature.
The fisherman and his son exchange no word, but they are perfectly united in their dangerous endeavor. Hokusai (北斎) presents the close interaction between natural forces and fragile, yet durable men. The pounding waves and wind-driven rain seem mercilessly cruel to humans, but at the same time, these forces also provide man with a way of life when he is determined to survive.
