「富嶽三十六景 凱風快晴」
1. The Red Fuji
This work captures the beautiful Mt. Fuji with a gentle ridge line and a blue sky on a clear sunny day, the mountain is dyed red.
The very simple color scheme and bold composition are impressive. The colorful Red Fuji is Hokusai's (葛飾 北斎) masterpiece, which is said to be a Japanese mental scenery. Next to The Great Wave, this is one of the Hokusai’s representative works.
2. Three Major Characters (三大役物)
Among the works of Hokusai's masterpiece series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (富嶽三十六景), “Fine Wind, Clear Sky, Red Fuji” (凱風快晴, 赤富士), “The Great Wave” (神奈川沖浪裏) and “Yamashita White Rain” (山下白雨) are considered to be particularly excellent. These three pieces are Known as the "Three major characters" (三大役物).
3. "凱風" - the soft southerly wind
The original title in Japanese “凱風快晴” literally means “Fine Wind, Clear Sky”. The Japanese word "凱風" (Kaikaze) derives from “The "Book of Songs" (詩經), that means the soft southerly wind blowing in the summer.
The ancients believed that the southerly winds are conducive to the growth of crops; therefore, "The Book of Songs" (詩經) compares south wind (凱風, "Kaikaze") to "Mother."
4. Why the mountain is red in a clear weather?
Actually, the "Red Fuji" is a natural phenomenon. When looking at the east hillside of Mt. Fuji from the Yamanashi (山梨県) in the summer-autumn morning, you can see this scene. To photograph Mt. Fuji, the Takizawa (滝沢) forest road of Fujiyoshida city (富士吉田市) is a famous shooting place.
