Carp in a Waterfall

「滝に鯉」
Does carp swim upstream against the flow? This is an interesting question.
Salmon is a typical case of swim against the water flow. When salmon return from the ocean, they swim upstream to their place of birth in order to spawn, and this is referred as salmon run.
In Hawaii, goby also makes a journey from the ocean to freshwater, but not for the purpose of spawning. During the trip, it is not uncommon for the fish to scale up 100-meter waterfalls. Unlike salmon, they don't do this by jumping; instead, they use their mouths as a sort of suction device.
Trout swim against the flow even when not migrating. The fish will face the stream current and swim against it to stay in place. They do this, waiting for little insects, worms, and other food to float by on the current.
The carp are instinctively swimming against the water flow. When we pump water into the upstream pool, the water flows fast enough to trigger the carp swim upstream. You can often see the carp gathered in the lower pool side, when they try to make their way to the upper pool. As carp swim upstream they will often jump.
In Chinese mythology, according to tradition, a carp that could swim upstream and then leap the falls of the Yellow River at the Dragon Gate would be transformed into a dragon: this motif symbolizes the success in the career.
In Japan, the ascending carp became a symbol of courage and was used especially for Boy's Day (5 May). The fish are symbolic of perseverance, faithfulness in marriage and good fortune.
