Sweet Fishes of the Nagara River, with Baskets and Flowers

「蝶揃」 「長流若鮎」
The Nagara River (Japanese: 長良川) has its source in the city of Gujo, Gifu Prefecture (郡上市, 岐阜県).
In Japanese the “sweetfish” is named “ayu” (アユ, 鮎, or 香魚, meaning sweet fish). The name "sweetfish" was inspired by the sweetness of its flesh. In reference to its typical one-year lifespan, it is also mentioned as "year-fish" (年魚). The ayu is the prefectural fish of Gifu Prefecture.
This work is a still life painting. The magic of still life is that they can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. Once captured with paint or other medium - the objects take on a whole new meaning. They are imbued with a life beyond the ordinary.
