The Bedroom (Bedroom in Arles)

While in Arles, van Gogh made this painting depicting his bedroom at 2, Place Lamartine in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, known as the Yellow House. The house embodied the artist's dream of a "Studio of the South," a community of like-minded artists working in harmony to create art for the future.
He prepared the room himself with simple furniture and with his own work on the wall. The door to the right opened on to the upper floor and the staircase; the door to the left was that of the guest room he prepared for Gauguin and expected his visiting; the window in the front wall looked on to Place Lamartine and its public gardens.
From his letters we know van Gogh was very pleased with this painting ‘When I saw my canvases again after my illness, what seemed to me the best was the bedroom.’ This picture was a van Gogh’s expression of 'perfect rest' or 'sleep in general'.
This room was not rectangular but trapezoid with an obtuse angle in the left hand corner of the front wall and an acute angle at the right.
The Bedroom is in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
