First Dream of Mountain Fuji

from the series “Three Lucky Dreams”
「初夢三番 富士」
It refers to "the first dream one has in the new year" (Hatsuyume, 初夢). In Japanese culture, the content of such a dream would foretell the luck of the dreamer in the coming year. Dreaming of Mount Fuji, hawk, or eggplant is considered good luck.
This superstition is well known in Japan and is often memorized in the form "Ichi-Fuji, Ni-Taka, San-Nasubi" (meaning: 1. Fuji, 2. Hawk, 3. Eggplant). In Japanese, it is "一富士、二鷹、三茄子". So dreaming of Mt. Fuji means the best luck.

There are two poems on this print.
ひととせのよきことふきを
まねくらし見そむる
夢の不二の扇ハ
One thing good thing
I look away from imitation living
Fantasy of a dream

雲の上にのほる
心地てうれしきハ
空に見あへる
不二のはつ夢
Clouds above the clouds
Comforting pleasure, Ha
I look into the sky
