Painted Shells, Tsurezuregusa

from the series “Essays in Idleness”
「つれ/\草」 「貝をおほふ人の我まへなるをはをきてよそを見わたし」

「つれ/\草」
The subject of this print is derived from “Essays in Idleness” (徒然草, Tsurezuregusa) which is a collection of essays written by the Japanese monk Yoshida Kenko between 1330 and 1332. The work is widely considered a gem of medieval Japanese literature and one of the three representative works of this genre.

「貝をおほふ人の我まへなるをはをきてよそを見わたし」
Literally means “I'll see you off the shells that make me a shell”

Poem and literature:
“In the Shell-matching Game, some people do not notice what is in front of them but look around instead...
… and so of course they lose the game when the shells before their eyes are claimed by other players.”

Created in about 1831–32
Artist: Totoya Hokkei (魚屋 北渓; Japanese, 1780–1850)
