Gardanne

Gardanne, south east slopes of the Captivel hill, is a hill town near Aix-en-Provence where Paul Cézanne was born in 1839 and has always been an important subject in Cézanne’s work.
Cézanne lived in Gardanne in 1885 and 1886; this is one of his three views of Gardanne. The steeple of the local church crowns the cluster of red-roofed buildings which animate the sloping terrain. Faceted and geometric, the structures anticipate early-twentieth-century Cubism.
Visiting at the Paul Cézanne Square you can admire the clock tower which dominates the whole village.
Cézanne’s style, focusing on optical illusions and geometry, helped to usher in the modern era of art that steered away from the realistic and impressionistic. He influenced artists such as Picasso, and the style of Abstract Expressionism.
