Still Life with Apples
By Paul Cézanne, 1893-1894Paul Cézanne painted the same objects - the green vase, the rum bottle, the ginger pot, and the apples - over and over again.
His interest was not in the objects themselves but in using them to experiment with shape, color, and lighting. He arranged his still lifes so that everything locked together.
Still-lifes provided Cézanne an opportunity to paint things in accordance with his conception of form. In still-lifes, he could explore ways of establishing visual harmony and three-dimensionality more thoroughly.
In the latter half of the 1890s Cézanne increasingly did more opulent, spatially more dynamic, indeed baroque compositions.
