The Large Bathers (The Bathers)

The Bathers, also known as The Large Bathers (Les Grandes Baigneuses)
By Paul Cézanne, created in 1898–1905
The painting has a sense of calm among the bathers. The calm water in The Bathers and the slow movement of the figures all provide a mythical element for this work.
The tone of Paul Cézanne's The Bathers is mystical. The abstract nude females present in the painting give the painting tension and density.
Cézanne's scene, with its tranquil lake and church tower is not an exact representation of a real village. Cézanne created this image using his imagination and drawing from nature.
The nature and the small town in the background of the image were inspired by Aix-en-Provence where he had grown up.
The atmosphere of this painting is strange and beautiful - the landscape is largely bluish, a soft haze in which sky and water and vegetation merge.
The male nudes in the painting may go back to an important part of Cezanne's boyhood to which he often returned in memory: the enchanted days spent with Zola and other friends on the bank of the river, swimming, playing, and talking.
It is believed that the posture of the grouped female nudes replicates the poses of models he had drawn in the art school or of statues in the Louvre. However, some critics say that it describes the women as goddesses in the middle of nature. The trees are acting as their theater.
The Bathers (1898–1905), Cézanne spent more than seven years working on it and it remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1906, is one of Cézanne’s masterpieces.
He is recognized as the most significant precursor of 20th-century formal abstraction in painting. When exhibited in 1907, this painting became an inspiration for the nascent Cubist movement.
The work now is located in Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, United States.
