Still Life with Apples

By Paul Cézanne, 1895-98
Still Life with Apples demonstrates that the genre of still-life can be a vehicle for faithfully representing not only objects but also the appearance of light and space. "Painting from nature is not copying the object," Cézanne wrote, "it is realizing one's sensations."
The edges of the fruit in the bowl are undefined and appear to shift. The right corner of the table tilts forward and fails to align with the left side. The pitcher, the bowl, and the glass all tilt to the left, drawn to the curtain. Some areas of canvas are left bare, like the drape of the tablecloth, appear unfinished.
Still-lifes provided Cézanne an opportunity to paint things in accordance with his conception of form. In still-lifes, he could explore ways of establishing visual harmony and three-dimensionality more thoroughly.
In the latter half of the 1890s Cézanne increasingly did more opulent, spatially more dynamic, indeed baroque compositions.
Still Life with Apples is more than an imitation of life; it is an exploration of seeing and the very nature of painting.
