Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?

By Paul Gauguin, 1897
Gauguin’s letters suggest that the painting should be read from right to left. Begin with the sleeping infant, the beginning stages of life. The front of the bag shows the right half of the painting and the reverse shows the left half.
There are three main figures in the painting representing the three questions of the title. Begin with the sleeping infant, the beginning stages of life. Towards the centre section there is a figure picking fruit referring to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. An idol, its hands mysteriously raised seems to indicate the Beyond. Lastly, an old woman approaching death appears reconciled and resigned to her thoughts. She completes the story.
Interpreting excerpts of letters Gauguin wrote to a friend, Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? can be understood as a meditation on birth, life and death in the light of Maori mythology.
This is Paul Gaugin’s most famous painting, and he considered it his masterpiece, and the culmination of his thoughts.
The painting was created in Tahiti, and is currently in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
