Washerwomen

By Paul Gauguin, 1888
Gauguin (1848-1903) created this painting before his visiting to Tahiti in 1891. The painting is also named as Washerwomen at the Roubine du Roi Arles where Gauguin met Vincent Van Gogh.
Washerwomen is a luscious and lavish capturing of an everyday task in this commune. The painting’s textured layers create intensity where the experience of feeling and hearing the forward and backward movement of the clothes grinding against the washer board and the seeping of the soap into the river, comes alive. Also, it’s even easy to imagine the sound of the chirping birds in the background.
