The Seed of the Areoi
By Paul Gauguin, 1892This painting’s original name in Tahitian is Te aa no areois. The Polynesian goddess sits on a blue-and-white cloth.
In The Seed of the Areoi, Gauguin painted his Tahitian mistress, Tehura, as the goddess Vaïraümati holding a flowering seed as a symbol of fertility.
According to Polynesian mythology, she was the wife of ‘Oro, the god of war, and gave birth to a powerful chieftain.
In the origin myth of the Areoi, a Polynesian secret society, a male sun god mates with the most beautiful of all women, Vaïraümati, to found a new race.
By painting his Tahitian mistress Tehura as Vaïraümati, Gauguin implied continuity between the island's past and its life during his own stay there.
