The Umbrellas

By Pierre-Auguste Renoir, circa 1881-86
The Umbrellas (Les Parapluies) was painted in two stages in the 1880s. It lasted for 6 years to be completed.
Renoir worked on this picture over several years; it was painted in two different stages. The right part, when Renoir began the painting around 1881-82, indicates the Impressionistic style with its loose brushstrokes and slightly brighter color palette. While, the left portion featuring a lady, with the band-box and dressed in a dreary grey dress, was painted around 1885-86. The dress style indicates the precise years. His painting style changed, it was probably after a trip to Italy from 1881-82 that he reworked the picture in a more severe style.
Renoir's The Umbrellas shows a bustling Paris street in the rain. The lovely midinette (a seamstress or assistant in a Parisian fashion house) in front, to the left of the frame, is the principal female figure, modeled by Renoir's lover and frequent subject Suzanne Valadon.
Behind the lady we see a vigorous young gentleman that is about to engage her, maybe offering her shelter under his umbrella. She is not even remotely interested, instead she gazed longingly at the viewer. While her face appears rosy and innocent, her eyes are filled with melancholy, despair, and wistful reconciliation.
