Three Kabuki Actors

Portraits of Kabuki Actors created by Utagawa Toyokuni I (歌川豊国)
Kabuki (a classical Japanese dance-drama) is a special profession. The figures in the portraits are famous actors. The unique costumes and makeup of the actors in the portraits depict the roles of actors in the drama. The characteristics of these "kabuki actor portraits" are unique and interesting, and they are fully exotic for Westerners.
Being a kabuki actor is a tough job. In Edo period, a single Kabuki program contains plays of many types (comedies, tragedies, dances, and ghost stories), and can last all day until the evening. It is because of the length of these performances, the concentration, and the years of rigorous training required, that the actors live almost all their lives on and behind the stages of Kabuki theaters.
These actors have carried the traditions of Kabuki from one generation to the next with only slight alterations. Many of them trace their ancestry and performing styles to the earliest Kabuki actors and add a “generation number” after their names to indicate their place in the long line of actors.
It is a testament to generations of dedicated actors that Kabuki has risen from its lowly beginnings to become one of the world's most celebrated theatrical traditions.
UNESCO - Intangible Cultural Heritage
In 2005, the "Kabuki theatre" was proclaimed by UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as an intangible heritage possessing outstanding universal value. In 2008, it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
