Kunisada (歌川 国貞) is one of the most renowned ukiyo-e artists in the Edo period. He acquired his fame from his expertise in depicting the beauty of Edo. Modern Thirty-two Type Countenances (当世三十弐相 よくうれ相) is created in 1820s by Kunisada (国貞).
In this print, Kunisada showed a dignified woman, she is so beautiful, with elegant characteristics and high temperament. Her costumes and hair accessories are gorgeous and pretty. In the Edo period, Ukiyo-e was an important medium for conveying the latest entertainment and fashion. It's no wonder that Edo women see these paintings as today's fashion catalogue.
