Portrait of Nozarashi Gosuke

“Nozarashi Gosuke carryimg a long sword”, from the series “Men of Ready Money with True Labels Attached”
「正札附現金男 野晒悟助」
This print shows the bust portrait of Nozarashi Gosuke (野晒悟助) in a robe patterned with skulls formed of cats and carrying a long sword over his shoulder, from which is suspended a wooden sandal with skull-like markings.
This painting is from Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s (歌川 國芳) series “Men of Ready Money with True Labels Attached” (正札附現金男), a series of heroic bust portraits derived from a contemporary kabuki play “Shôfuda tsuki kongen kusazuri”.
In the Edo period, Ukiyo-e was the principal medium of Japanese entertainment culture. The main theme of Ukiyo-e is the heroic characters in the story and the popular Kabuki actors. Utagawa Kunisada (歌川 国貞) created his art basing on the popular Kabuki at the time, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi's works (歌川 國芳) tended to emphasize the hero's heroic story, placing the brotherhood and loyalty above personal interests.

Nozarashi Gosuke (野晒悟助) is the henchman of the robber leader Nippon Daemon Rihei. He is known as a street knight who lived by a strict code of honor which dictated that they always must assist town people in need. This theme is subject of a popular kabuki play. They are like the Japanese Robin Hoods.
