Obsessed with Cats

(Cats Suggested As The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido)
「其のまま地口 猫飼好五十三疋」
In English this print is generally named as “Cats Suggested as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido”. However, it is sometimes referred to as “Obsessed with Cats”.
This print is a fun spoof on Hiroshige's “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido”. Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重, 1797–1858) created his famous and most successful series of “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” (東海道五十三次) in 1833–34 after his first travel along the Tokaido in 1832. This series consists of 53 prints, each of which represents one of the 53 post stations on the Tokaido route (The Eastern Sea Road).
Tokaido, meaning Eastern Sea Road, links the shogun's capital, Edo, to the imperial one, Kyoto, and was the main travel and transport artery of old Japan. It had fifty-three post stations along its route and these provided stables, food and lodgings for travelers.
Looking closely, you will see that each cat is marked with one of the 53 station names. This is why this print was named “Cats Suggested as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido”. Where Hiroshige captured the landscapes of each station, Kuniyoshi showed them through cat puns.
Kuniyoshi was an obsessed cat lover. It was said that his studio was full of the cats. His love of cats spilled over into his art. Cats appear in many of his compositions. In this work, he not only depicts the Tokaido road but also the cats in caricature.
There are 55 cats appear in this triptych print. He perfectly captures the nuances and subtle movements of each cat. They are all distinct, and each of them seems to have their own personality. This illustration comes from his unique ability for observing and drawing cats.
Although the fun of these puns is a bit lost in translation, one can easily imagine how great they are for Japanese people who are familiar with Tokaido.
