From 1633 to 1853, for a period of over 220 years, Japan was an isolated country. The “Closed Country” ended after 1853 when the American Black Ships commanded by Matthew Perry forced the opening of Japan to American (Perry Expedition).
In 1858, Japan signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce (also known as the "Harris Treaty") with Western countries. The Port of Yokohama was, then, formally opened to foreign trade on the 2nd of June 1859. Business of foreign traders from five countries of America, England, France, Holland and Russia, since then, started in Yokohama.
The Iwaki Tower (岩亀楼, English: Rock Turtle Tower) was a luxurious brothel in Yokohama which is called “Gankirou”. The name of Iwaki Tower came from its operator “Iwakiya Sakichi”.
