This lady's handbag shows a collage of 8 ukiyo-e prints, including six "Americans", one "Englishmen" and one "Russians".
Utagawa Yoshitora (歌川 芳虎) was born in Edo (modern Tokyo) and active from about 1850 to 1880. He was a famous designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and an illustrator of books and newspapers.
Yoshitora (歌川 芳虎) was excelled in prints of foreigners (Yokohama-e, meaning Yokohama-pictures). He created a famous series of People from Foreign Lands (外国人物尽). In his series he depicted the foreigners from 5 nations in the years of Japanese Edo period and recorded their activities.
Among such many prints, concentrated on the theme of “foreigners”, he depicted Americans (亜墨利加人, sometimes he calls them 亜米利加人), Englishmen (英吉利人), Dutchmen (阿蘭陀人), Frenchmen (佛蘭西人), Russians (魯西亜人), and others. These artworks show “the foreigners in the eyes of Japanese artists of the time.”
