This triptych prints, designed by Utagawa Yoshitora (歌川 芳虎), depicts a view of a balloon ascension, a scene of the American consul and several women, wearing colorful bell-shaped skirts, watching the Japanese navy department test balloon aircraft in front of the American consulate in Tokyo, Japan.
Utagawa Yoshitora was a prolific woodblock print designer, especially known for his designs of foreigners-a genre of print known as Yokohama-e, named for Yokohama port which opened to the West in 1859.
Utagawa Yoshitora's prints show the Japanese's views on foreigners visiting Japan during this period and their observations of Westerners' lives in Japan.
