Legend and History
Kinryuzan Temple is another name of Senso-ji Temple (浅草寺) which is a Buddhist temple dedicated to the “bodhisattva Kannon”. Bodhisattva Kannon means Lord of Compassion, Goddess of Mercy, or referred as "Guanyin". Located in Asakusa, Tokyo, this temple is, therefore, also known as "Asakusa Kannon Temple".

The temple was first founded in 645 AD, which makes it the oldest temple in Tokyo. Senso-ji Temple (浅草寺) is so famous, it is one of the most widely visited spiritual sites in the world with over 30 million visitors annually. The legend states that in the year of 628, two brothers fished a gold statue of "Kannon" out of what is now the Sumida River. Despite of trying to return "the figure" to the river for several times, it always came back to them. Being recognized as "Kannon", it was enshrined. Consequently, Senso-ji Temple (浅草寺) was built near the spot where the statue of "Kannon" was discovered, and completed in 645.

Since Senso-ji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo (Edo City), this site has been the favorite theme of ukiyo-e artists, especially the snowy scene. In addition to this one, our website also introduces another snowy painting of Senso-ji Temple created by Keisai Eisen (渓斎 英泉) in the late 1830s, KE-9, Snow Scene at Senso-ji Temple. While Keisai Eisen described the entire temple scene, including the main hall, the gate, and the five-story pagoda, the artist of this painting, Utagawa Hiroshige III (三代目 歌川 広重) depicted the activities of the Edo people in great detail.

In this painting, we see many tourists, some are walking into the temple building, and some people hang around in front of the small shops next to the sidewalk. These small shops present the unique style and characteristics of Japan at that time. People holding umbrellas to keep out snow, wearing Edo style costumes and traditional Japanese sandals (geta), all of these are visibly clear and distinct.

Edo, old temple, falling snow, small shops, people in activity, and contemporary clothing, constitute a beautiful painting. This is a scene of the Edo period and one day activities of people. Utagawa Hiroshige III depicted these in detail. This painting might be created during the New Year; it depicts the New Year's Senso-ji Temple. New Year period are the days for Japanese to go to the temple to worship God. This scene expresses the peace, prosperity and social harmony of Japan at that time.
